Liquid Shakti - burn magazine

The Ganges river in India, known locally as Gangā or Gangā Mata, is widely believed to be the incarnation of the Hindu Goddess Gangā. The photographic series ‘Liquid Shakti’, takes a closer look at the relationship between residents and their most sacred river, from its influence in everyday life, to its role as Goddess, Mother and healer.

The Sanskrit term ‘Shakti’ is a concept and personification of the divine feminine energy that flows throughout the Hindu cosmos. During her descent from the heavens to the earth, the river Goddess became Lord Shiva’s eternal consort, and thus his Shakti. It is believed that to bathe in, drink, meditate or die by the Gangā’s banks leads to moksha, or spiritual liberation. The series documents people's relationship and interactions with the Ganges river close to its source in the Himalayas, focusing on the holy towns of Hardvār and Rishikesh.
